We all like surprises. And anyone who arrives at Echuca's River Gallery Inn for the first time is in for a very pleasant one.
 
Behind the facade of restored 1860s two-storey shops is one of the most unique bed and breakfast establishments you'll ever see. The entry foyer, off Echuca's High Street historic port precinct, leads into a welcoming lounge featuring a collection of special local art.
 
Beyond, with a style found in the best boutique hotels, are eight elegant suites sure to fire the imagination - and transport guests on a romantic tour of the world's most famous boudoirs.
 
Each of the guest rooms has been professionally decorated to a theme. The Tuscan room has a marble-arched Roman bathroom, the French Provincial Room is all mellow pastels, the Victorian suite is decorated around a frilled canopy bed, and the Scottish room has a four-poster. All rooms are luxuriously furnished, have ensuites (five of which have double spas), easy chairs, and tea-making facilities. All but one has an open fireplace with plenty of wood for those chilly winter nights.
 
Rooms are also individually air-conditioned and heated. They face either the central court-yard, or have a secluded verandah area overlooking High Street's restored shops.
 
Just a hundred metres from the Inn, Echuca's historic wharf area on the Murray River is unsurpassed in this country. There are enough tourist attractions for a visit of several days - perhaps a night in every room at the Inn?
 
Apart from paddle-steamer trips on the river, there are golf courses, a Port museum, the ancient Red Gums of the Barmah State Forest, Echuca's fine restaurants, local wineries, and many specialty shops to explore.
 
Proprietor Monica Gray says that many of her guests return to Echuca for its comfortable historic ambience - and to rediscover romance in another of the Inn's suites.
 
Tariffs at Echuca's River Gallery Inn range from $155 to $220 per couple, which includes a substantial buffet breakfast in the breakfast room or in the sun-filled courtyard. Mid-week three-night, and corporate rate discount packages are available too.
